Packed In Salt

“You have to pack the pages in salt,” Alithea says. “Otherwise, it won’t work.”

Can’t we just burn them? you might ask.

“No,” Alithea says. “Burning is its own ritual and may actually release the powers within, upon, or behind the pages, so we do not burn unless that is what is required. This is the larger principle, you see: to do what is required. And what is required here is salt.”

Why? you might ask.

“Some people call it ‘purification’ and others think of it as ‘protection.’ While that might be true, it is better described as nullification or cancelation or inhibition, in the case of very powerful magick.”

Who are we trying to nullify? you could ask.

“Teresa,” Alithea says.

• You gain one rank of magick from studying this chapter with Alithea, if that’s something you want and are keeping up with. If you’re breaking out subtypes of magick, it could be considered primordial or primal magick.

• It is up to you to decide at this point what Alithea’s and your own motivations are. Are y’all trying to help me? Or are you trying to stop me from doing something? Or both? Write it in your journal, along with some reasons why and what you hope to achieve by doing so. You might also include which pages (at least from what volume or volumes) are being packed in salt, as this could matter later on in our story.

• Think of a person (including perhaps yourself) who might benefit from a ritual like this. Who would that be? And what pages should be packed in salt? If there are no extant ones, you can create them yourself. What is written upon them is a very personal and sincere matter, so be honest, kind, and well-intentioned. That’s just a free suggestion for you. If you’re not sure or are scared or offput by magick, just don’t do anything. Simply wish that person well, and move on with your life.
